If you’re running a newsletter for a township chances are there are newspapers that cover your area as well. So what makes your local newsletter different to those newspapers that cover your town?

YOU HAVE COMPETITION (kind of)

You do have competition, although I don’t like calling it that because you can work alongside each other with no issues. But a similar resource will exist. Even if there aren’t any other people or businesses running an online local newsletter, chances are your city/town will have printed local newspapers or community newsletters sent out by a community group or Council.

Usually, newspapers and other local newsletters aren’t restricted by the borders of one suburb. But focusing and targeting one town only makes you instantly relevant to everyone who lives there, which is your first point of difference.

Sometimes that’s not enough though. You need to be different from the local newspapers. You can’t have exactly the same articles with the same information and have a strong subscriber base. You need to make your newsletter cater to locals or they won’t find your newsletter interesting.

The key to your newsletter being different is you.
